There is another kind of special horse in fact there are two of them they are horse shaped structures in your brain that are about the size of your thumbs.

Found on the inside of your left and right temporal lobes each one is called a hippocampus the Greek word or seahorse because it's shaped like one two are called hippocampus.

The hippocampus meaning seahorse named for its curved shape is an important component of the brain.

Much is still unknown about liver campus but it is now widely accepted the hippocampus plays important roles in episodic memory and navigation.

You cannot remember all of that it would overload the brain system to be able to remember all of that.

There was something that was meaningful there that was extracted out and there's a dance that occurs between cortex and the hippocampus, that places a priority on being able to retain that.

Notice when we're trying to remember something we're not necessarily instructing ourselves that all I've got to really remember that some of it happens because of what is occurring in the moment when that memory is being laid down.

It's very important at this point to understand that just in front of the hippocampus is the amygdala. The amygdala being just in front of the hippocampus means there's an important memory emotion connection.

One of the most popular theories concerning the role of the hippocampus and episodic memory is hippocampal indexing theory.

This theory states that when we have a conscious experience many different areas of the neocortex are activated corresponding to the different aspects of that experience.

For example the visual cortex  the visual aspect and the auditory cortex for the auditory aspects etc.

The hippocampus acts as an index storing the different patterns of neocortex activity associated with all our different memories.
